[2020] Yamaha MT 15 BS-VI Pros and Cons | Should you buy one?

 

MT 15 BS-VI Overview:

Yamaha MT 15 got a huge demand on the market in the end of 2019. Now keeping that in mind Yamaha launches a newer version of MT 15 i.e MT 15 BS-VI version this year. Well MT 15 comes under the 155cc segment with a single-cylinder liquid-cooling 4-stroke SOHC engine. It generates a power of 18.5 PS @ 10,000 rpm and 13.9 Nm torque @ 8,500 rpm. This bike is considered as one of the best bikes in terms of looks, performance, and mileage.

The Yamaha MT 15 gets the design from its elder brother MT-09 which is a 900cc naked sports bike. Earlier in the BS-IV versions, there were 2 colors- Dark Matte Blue and Metallic Black but in the BS-VI version, one new color is also added i.e. Ice Fluo-Vermillion which is a combination of white, black and red like the duke series. This bike weighs about 138 kilograms and the ground clearance is 170 mm.

So, let us also discuss the Pros and Cons of the new MT 15 BS-VI model.

Pros:

1.Engine:- 

The first advantage of this is definitely its engine, here we get a 155cc liquid-cooled with 6-speed gearbox SOHC engine which provides a power of 18.5 PS @ 10,000 rpm which is a very powerful than the 160cc bike segments also and 13.9 Nm torque @ 8,500 rpm. The MT15 engine also gets the latest Yamaha’s VVA(Variable Valve Actuation) technology which helps the riders to enjoy their ride without compromising the power. The bike also comes with sleeper clutch which helps the engine to overcome the load from downshifts.

2.Riding and Comfortness:- 

The manipulation of the Yamaha MT 15 is fantastic in the road where the riders can control the bike however he wants. The Riding posture of the MT 15 is not aggressive, unlike the R15 which gives a sportier position whereas both the bikes come with the same delta-box frame. MT 15 is a bike meant for both short and long-distance ride unlike the R15 which is meant for racing and
short distance ride.
The MT 15 has 220mm rear and 282mm front disk brakes with an anti-locking braking system in the front disc which helps the riders in better manipulation.

3.BiFunctional LED Headlights:-

The MT 15 comes with BI-functional LED headlights and a projector lamp underneath which gives better visibility at night. No other bikes in the market can beat MT 15 in terms of night visibility and design.

4.Power to Body Ratio:-

As we have mentioned earlier that Yamaha MT 15 produces high power among the 155cc segments. The power is similar to R15 which a fairing bike but as the MT 15 is a naked bike, it has a better power to body ratio. Hence, the MT 15 gives better throttle response. The throttle punch is very crispy without any lag.

5.Design:-

 
The Yamaha MT 15 gets the design from its elder brother MT-09 which is a 900cc naked sports bike. The MT 15 gives the riders a superb road presence with its front headlights and MT-09 Design.

Cons: 

1.Single Channel ABS:-

The Yamaha MT 15 comes with a single-channel ABS which is a major disadvantage of this bike because all the bikes around this price segment come with a dual-channel dual ABS.

2.Seat Comfort:-

The seat of Yamaha MT 15 is not very comfortable but the riding posture is very good. The seat is a little bit harder where the rider might feel uncomfortable in long rides. Moreover, the space for the pillion is also very less.

3.Pricing:-

The pricing of the MT 15 is around Rs 1,70,000(on-road). The price is fair by looking at its features but the price of the R15 is just only 6-7k more which has better features than MT 15. The R15 is an emotion and has a great market value. So why would anyone buy the MT 15? unless the rider is looking for a naked bike. Yamaha could have given better pricing of MT 15 in competing the R15.

Should you buy it:

My answer to this question is yes, but the only deal-breaker is that its price is little higher as compared to the other 155-cc bikes available in the market and what also misses out is that the Yamaha MT 15 doesn't come with Dual-channel ABS whereas the Yamaha R15 comes with the Dual-channel ABS which is only Rs 4k more.

However, if you are a daily commuter, this bike will your right choice because it is also the only performance-oriented 150cc naked motorcycle out there in the market. And also the bike doesn't compromise in terms of looks, performance, good handling, and gives you a better road presence. The only other option you have within the same price bracket is the KTM 125 Duke, which pales in terms of performance when compared to this naked Yamaha.
